Obstacles will Serve as Your Stepping Stones

The obstacles of your past and present will serve as your stepping stones.

“Your past and present obstacles will serve as the stepping stones to your future.”

I awoke from my sleep one night from a vivid dream where I was speaking these words to a person who was unknown to me. Upon awakening from the dream, I immediately saw in my mind’s eye a Stone Smith laying down a pathway, using natural stone. Just behind him was a pile of large stones of various sizes. Some looked like small boulders. Each stone was irregularly shaped; some were thicker than others. Some stones had sharp jagged edges.

I watched as the craftsman selected one large stone and chipped away at it with his tools, making sure to file down the rough edges. He then turned and laid the stone on a previously prepared base, manipulating and rotating it until it fit perfectly against stones that had already been laid. He then packed sand around the stone and swept it off. That rock wasn’t going anywhere, and it was safe and stable to walk on. What had once been an obstacle was now a stepping stone. I could see that the path went on quite a distance, although it was not yet complete.

A couple of days later after my dream, a friend posted photos of her family’s autumn project, the laying down of a natural stone patio and pathways in their spacious back yard. She graciously provided the photo above for me to use in this article. I knew God was speaking not just to me, but this word was for others as well.

Isaiah 62:10-12 – “Go through, go through the gates; prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway; clear it of stones; lift up a signal over the peoples. Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.’ And they shall be called The Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.”

The stones that once tore at your feet will be made into a safe path for you to walk. For those of us with difficult pasts, it can be difficult to navigate through the boulders and potholes when we look back. We wonder how God could possibly move us forward with so many obstacles in our way. Our feet are bloody and bruised from stumbling over stones that jut out from the pathway. However, those obstacles are now behind us. With His help, we can move forward. Those obstacles we once thought were insurmountable will be crushed under His feet to become a firm foundation for our future. However, there will come a time when God will ask us to keep our eyes focused on the road in front of us and to not look back. There will come a day when He will ask us to stop allowing our past to be an excuse to not move forward on His highway.

For those of us who are facing obstacles in our path today, it is tempting to grow weary of the seemingly endless detours and hurdles that lay ahead. However, James writes, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”(James 1:2-4) Every trial you are facing WILL be used by God to build your pathway. In the hand of the Master Craftsman, your path will be perfect and complete, lacking nothing!
