God’s Not a Cosmic Usher

God doesn’t just leave us road markers along our path then waves us through, saying He’ll meet us on the other side. No, He walks along beside us, enjoying fellowship with His creation.

Hi and welcome back to Daily Bible promises with a Twist. And today, as usual, we’ll start off reading the New International Version. Psalm 16:11 “You make known to me the path of life” and in the New American Standard Bible the same verse. I’ll read the complete verse. It says Psalm 16:11, “You won’t make known to me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand, there are pleasures forever.

Psalm 16 gives us a glimpse of the intimate relationship that David enjoyed with God. There’s a certain comfortableness – not familiarity, not taking advantage of, but a comfortableness that David feels in the presence of God and that’s evident in Psalm 16.

So let’s go to verse 11. “You will make known to me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand, there are pleasures forever.” You’ll notice that it does not say, “You will make known to me every step along the path that I am about to take so I can decide whether I want to go down that path or not. And there’s no hidden surprises and I can see right to the very end.”

No. In my mind’s eye, I see the classic fork in the road. One is labeled the path of life. One is labeled the path of death. In one, God is gesturing to David with open arms. “Come and follow me.” He’s not like a cosmic usher standing at the beginning of the path and saying, “Right down here David, enjoy the trip. No.

God invites David to walk alongside of Him. “In your presence is fullness of joy.” So even though David cannot see the end of the path because of the twists and turns and the hills and the valleys that are along that path, there is a joy there because he is in the presence of the one that he loves so much.

“In your right hand, there are pleasures forever.” Forgive me if I’m stretching this analogy a little bit too far. But if you’ve ever hiked with a group of friends and one person is in charge of all the treats and you trust that person and you like that person and you know that person knows what you like, you will trust them that they will dispense the goodies so to speak at appropriate intervals along the way just where you need cheering up and you need that encouragement to keep on going along the way. God knows exactly when we need that word of encouragement. We need to sense His pleasure over us and we need to sense His delight in bringing us pleasure as well.

So, No, God does not show us every bump along the road. He doesn’t just hand us a roadmap and says, “I’ll see you on the other side.” He elected to walk beside us as we walk along the path of life, to bring us joy and to bring pleasure to our hearts in His presence.
