Distraction and short attention spans rob us of the joy of reaching focused goals. What rewards do we reap when we focus on the One Thing?
Proverbs 21:21. “Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honour.”
Let’s read that verse in another translation just so we can get a broader picture and I’ll be using the New Living Translation. And this is what it says. “Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honour.” You notice the difference between prosperity and righteousness.
Prosperity does not just mean financial success. It means living a prosperous life in body, soul, and spirit. When I read the verse in the New International Version immediately, Matthew 6:31-33 popped into my head. “So don’t worry about these things, saying what we eat? What we drink? What we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers. But your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need.” It isn’t easy to pursue two things when they go in the opposite direction. You need to choose one or the other.
When we focus on one key aspect in our lives, everything else falls in place. If we prioritize seeking the kingdom of God and strive to live righteously, we will enjoy the rewards that come from a righteous life. The Bible is filled with references highlighting the benefits of living righteously. While it’s perfectly fine to set financial goals and have other aspirations, all these objectives should align with our ultimate goal and purpose.
If those things we seek distract us from the ultimate goal of living a righteous life and pursuing God’s unfailing love, then perhaps those things might need to be set aside until we can see them through the lens that’s primary focus is on the Kingdom of God.
