You Can’t Have It Both Ways

Live a life of integrity and you’ll stand a better chance of influencing the nation where you live. You can’t be bragging about all the cool stuff God is doing for you while living a life that leaves people scratching their heads in confusion.

[00:00:00] Hi and welcome to Daily Bible Promises with a Twist. And as usual, I’m reading from these cards written in The New International Version Genesis 21:22. “God is with you in everything you do.” Today’s bible verse is going to be a prime example of why you need to read things in context, and for you to know who is speaking to who and what was happening at the time that conversation took place. You are going to be reading from Genesis 21 in the New American Standard Bible, verse 22 and verse 23.

[00:00:31] “Now it came about at that time that Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do; now therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but according to the kindness that I have shown to you, you shall show to me and to the land in which you have sojourned.”

[00:01:10] Abimelech was the ruler of the area where Sarah and Abraham were temporarily living. Abraham and Sarah were nomads, so they moved to a lot. I think Abraham’s reputation went ahead of him. He knew by the size of Abraham’s flocks and by his wealth and by the expanse of his territory that Abraham was indeed blessed by God, but Abimelech also knew of Abraham’s past dealings with those who ruled over the areas Abraham and Sarah had previously passed through. Therefore, this very wise ruler reminds Abraham of where the blessing was coming from, that Abimelech expected Abraham to honor the God that he said that he served by acting justly and uprightly with no deceit in their negotiation process.

[00:02:15] Unfortunately there are way too many stories out there where a person professes to be a Christian and gives all the glory to God when things are going wonderfully in their lives. Maybe they won the Super Bowl. Maybe their business is flourishing. Maybe they got an incredible land deal. Whatever it is, they publicly declare that the blessings they received at the hands of God. But at the same time, the way that they’re living their lives day to day does not reflect that they truly believe that God is with them.

[00:02:57] Non-Christians are turned off and repulsed by the double-mindedness, the shadiness, and the lack of integrity that they have experienced at the hands of those who profess Jesus is Lord, but the way that they lived their lives and do their business dealings show no evidence that Jesus truly is lord of all of their lives.

God is with you wherever you go. Yes! But that does not mean He puts His stamp of approval on everything that you do.
