“Anyone home?” Bill’s booming voice was easily heard throughout the whole house and backyard. Bill didn’t live at our house, but he might as well have. He was dating my sister and as a result, he had become an adopted son of sorts. Not needing an invitation, the strapping young firefighter-in-training made himself at home and headed out to the kitchen. Opening the fridge, he rummaged around until he found an ice-cold beverage to his liking. My father called him out to the backyard where he was setting up the barbeque.
“Going to stay for dinner?” My Dad needlessly asked. Bill often found his way to our meal table after a long shift before heading out to his cabin. “We’re having steak, baked potatoes, green beans and corn on the cob.”
Bill took a long sip of his drink and drawled. “Sure, but don’t worry about me. I’ll just have a glass of water and a toothpick to gnaw on when the hunger pains overwhelm me.”
Bill and my sister eventually parted ways, but his expression found a permanent place in my family. I still use the phrase as it comes in handy when a friend is reticent in accepting the generosity of others. As most of my friends know my stories by now, I only have to mention a glass of water and a toothpick, and they see my point.
Personal Application
Psalm 34:8-10 – “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”
Take the Lord up on his offer and sit at his banqueting table. Take second and third and even fourth helpings of His Word. Drink deep of His goodness and His grace. Don’t hold back; Take all that He offers. The Lord’s table will never run out; you need to never fear that you are taking more than your share of His goodness. The more you hunger, the more He provides.
Lamentations 3:22-23 – “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
