Restitution! God will Restore What was Taken

There is not one life, not even yours; that is beyond redemption. There is nothing you have done - nothing that you have failed to do - that disqualifies you from God’s promise once you turn back to Him!

I have been the unfortunate victim of three burglaries. Each event left me shaken. The first incident occurred when I shared a house with a single mom and her young daughter. I was the first to arrive home after a mid-week church service. I heard the back door slam shut as I opened the front door, but I didn’t think much of it. We had tenants living below us. I did notice the makeshift office in our living room looked messier than usual. But nothing stood out for me. I felt vaguely uneasy, but I couldn’t put a finger on why I felt that way.

It was not until my roommates arrived home that I realised we had been robbed. The thieves ransacked their bedrooms and overturned dressers. Jewellery, musical instruments, and cherished family heirlooms were gone. All that was missing from my room was a tiny bit of cash. Nevertheless, we no longer felt safe in that neighbourhood and moved a few months later.

The second time I was robbed was more humorous than traumatic. While on the mission field in Thailand, I came home one evening to discover my bed was missing. It appeared my bed was not a bed at all; it was an old door fitted on a makeshift bed frame. Our landlord decided he needed the door for another home he was hoping to rent out. Technically, he was not a thief; however, he broke and entered! Fortunately, I could find a proper cot by the end of that evening. At least He did not take my pillow and sleeping bag.

My third time robbed was ironic, given that I lived in the basement suite of a police officer’s home. He lived above me with his young family. Many valuable items were taken from the main floor. When the thieves entered my basement suite, a boom box was the only thing they took before they made a quick exit. We found out later that they fled the scene when they saw my friend’s heavy winter police parka in a shared storage space just outside my suite. The police apprehended the thieves, and we recovered most of our stolen items. My friend received a lot of ribbing from his fellow officers as it appeared he forgot to lock the back door, giving the thieves easy access.

Whether you left the door to your spiritual home unlocked, allowing the enemy to waltz into your spiritual ‘home’ and vandalise your sanctuary or whether the enemy broke the door down with force, the Lord is still your Avenger! If you call out to Him, He will rebuild the broken walls, welcome you back to His strong tower, and spiritually restore all the enemy took from you.

There is not one life, not even yours; that is beyond redemption. There is nothing you have done – nothing that you have failed to do – that disqualifies you from God’s promise once you turn back to Him! No situation is unredeemable when placed in the hands of our Saviour.

Deuteronomy 30:1-6 MSG – “God, your God, will restore everything you lost; he’ll have compassion on you; he’ll come back and pick up the pieces from all the places where you were scattered. No matter how far away you end up, God, your God, will get you out of there and bring you back to the land your ancestors once possessed. It will be yours again. He will give you a good life and make you more numerous than your ancestors. God, your God, will cut away the thick calluses on your heart and your children’s hearts, freeing you to love God, your God, with your whole heart and soul and live, really live.”

If you call out to God, He will restore the broken walls, return the ground taken by the enemy, and bring you to a place of safety.
