God’s not a Sugar Daddy?

Some Christians think that if they quote enough Bible verses they can twist God’s arm and get what they want. What if God wants to give us much more than what we think we need to survive?

[00:00:05] Hi and welcome to Daily Bible Promises with a twist. I’m Katherine and if you haven’t yet visited my YouTube channel I encourage you to do so. Just go to YouTube and look for Katherine Walden Ministries. Today as it’s been my practice with the series that we’re doing, I’m read from a Bible Promise box. Every day I’m reading one of the verses and putting it into context. And the Bible box is written in The New International Version.

[00:00:36] I John 3:22 says, “We will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.”

[00:00:48] That’s a wonderful one-liner Bible promise. But there’s more to it and this little gem is tucked in between some pretty important Bible verses that will give us an idea of what John was talking about. So, let’s go to the New American Standard Bible starting at 1 John 3:18 -22. “Little children. Let us not love with words or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We shall know by this that we are of the truth and we shall assure our heart before him and whenever our heart condemns us for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.”

[00:01:28] “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us. We have confidence before God and whatever we ask we received for him because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another just as he commands us and the one who keeps his commands abides in him and he in him”

[00:01:57] Let’s go back to verse 22 “Whatever we ask we receive from him because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.” So, what are the things that are pleasing in God’s sight?

[00:02:12] Well, John lays it down pretty clearly that we love one another and that we don’t just love with words. That we love in deed and in truth. If we allow that reassurance to be in our heart that even if we don’t love perfectly, God is greater than our hearts and He knows all things.

[00:02:37] Is it possible that ‘whatever we ask, we receive from Him’…do you think perhaps that might have something to do with love? Loving one another and in our shortcomings asking God to come in and strengthen those areas in us that are weak. I’m just pondering that. Otherwise, this random verse really would not make sense in the rest of the passage. So. think about that. It’s not a guarantee that God is a sugar daddy up in the sky and if you ask for anything He’s going to give it to you. I don’t believe that’s what John was saying.
