It’s Enough to Drive a Man Insane

Do you ever wish you could catch a break? If there ever was a man who deserved a break, it was David! Even when he was on the run from King Saul, he managed to keep his sanity even when he was pretending to be insane.

Hi there and welcome back to Daily Bible Promises with a Twist. And today’s verse will be a bit of a twist. We’re reading from Psalm 34 verse 7 in the New International Version. “The angels of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and he delivers them.”

Now if Psalm 34 sounds familiar to you, we just discussed that a few days ago and I’ll put the link in the description below my YouTube video or you can follow the ‘I’ that appears in the corner right now.

So when this verse popped up from the Daily Bible Promise box, I wondered what more can I share about this Psalm? So, I went back to first Kings to read the story behind this Psalm and I almost had a heart attack until I realized that Abimelech and Achish were one in the same person. That Achish was his personal name and Abimelech was his royal title.

And just for a refresher on what’s going on, David is on the run from King Saul who’s trying to kill him. David ran to a Hebrew priest who gave him food to eat which happened to be food that was set aside for an offering to the Lord. David was extremely grateful for the food. David then asked, “You wouldn’t happen to have any weapons around that I could use, would you?” And the priest said, “Well as a matter of fact I do! Go look over there you’ll find a sword that’s wrapped in cloth and that sword happens to be the sword of the giant who you killed.”

How’s that for coincidence!

David grabs the sword and he’s on the run again. And he runs to King Achish of Gath. Before David could catch his breath, he realized that the servants of Achish were singing that top ten song, “Saul has slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands.” Okay, that song was not music to David’s ears because he feared that king Achish would be afraid of him and see him as a threat and therefore kill him.

The only idea David could come up with at that point was to pretend he was completely insane to the point that King Achish says in verse 14 and 15 of Samuel 21 “Then Achish said to his servants, ‘Behold you see that man behaving as a madman? Why did you bring him to me? Do I lack madmen that you would have brought this one to act the madman in my presence? Shall this one come into my house?” So Achish sent him away.

David is on the run once again. Poor David! He hasn’t had a chance to take a breather for a long time. No matter how brave a person is, there comes that point where they just cannot take much more. Their physical reserve is gone, their emotional reserve is gone. David had worries about his home and his family and the future of his nation.

But David did not have a physical or a mental breakdown. why? I believe verse 7 is a key in Psalm 34. “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and rescues them.” David had an understanding that no matter how bad things got, God’s protection was around him and there were angelic beings that were protecting him and being his guard.

If life circumstances are making you feel like you are a hamster on the wheel right now and there’s no way you can get off that wheel because of those circumstances, take a deep breath and know that God’s angelic guard is encamped around you, holding you, up and carrying you through these rough times.
