I felt the Lord say, “Clean your soul’s eyeglasses!”
I have at least five pairs of reader eyeglasses hanging around my apartment. Most days, the majority of these eyeglasses could do with a good cleaning. Most days, they will be haphazardly cleaned by a rub against my shirt. I do realize that this stop-gap measure does nothing but smear the dirt around. When I lift a pair of glasses to the sunlight, the sunlight reveals every smudge left behind. Every few days, I gather eyeglasses that are in easy reach, wash them with a tiny bit of mild dish soap, and then polish them with a soft rag. It makes a world of difference!
I must confess that when I am in the middle of writing, I will put up with dirty lenses, holding off cleaning them properly so as not to break my train of thought. My procrastination doesn’t accomplish much beyond strained eyes and a diminished amount of work output. I realize it is pure laziness on my part. All I have to do is get out of my chair, walk to my kitchen, and wash my eyeglasses. As soon as I do so, the change in my worldview is dramatic, and I can do my work more efficiently.
Many Christians are walking around looking at their world through dirty lenses, and they might not even be aware of the problem. Compromise, personal prejudices and cultural biases, poor reading and viewing choices, bad habits and covert addictions, critical and judgmental attitudes each adds a grimy film to our worldview. This layer builds up so gradually that it is barely noticeable to us. However, we feel fatigued and strained, we find it hard to concentrate on the things of God, and we feel out-of-sorts. We don’t know why.
Thank God for His Holy Spirit and trusted brothers and sisters in Christ who lovingly point out that the lens of our worldview needs more than a surface spit-and-polish to be clean once again. We need to take our soul’s ‘eyeglasses’ to the cross and apply the blood of Jesus.

Ask the Lord to point out where your spiritual lens have been dirtied to the point they obscure your vision.
Psalm 139:23-24 (MSG) -“Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; see for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life.”
Be wary of the leaven in your life. A ‘little compromise’ can cause major problems!
Galatians 5:9 (NASB) – ” A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.”
Enlist the help of trusted, grace-filled, and loving friends who know you well. Permit them to help you by pointing out any spots on your soul’s eyeglasses you might have missed.
Proverbs 27:5-6 – “Better is open rebuke, than love that is concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.”
Learn from scriptural accounts of people with blind spots and how the Lord restored them once they were willing to be transparent.
Study David’s lapse into sin. (2 Samuel 11,12) David’s slide all began with him staying back from the battlefield, even though it was the ‘season that Kings went to war.’ Things snowballed from there! God knew David’s heart well enough that He sent a man David trusted to help bring his son back to his senses.
Beware the danger of falling into spiritual pride. Remain teachable.
John 9:39-41 And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.” Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “We are not blind too, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”
1 Corinthians 13:8-12 -“Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.”
