Ants, Cliffs, and Jesus. What Gives?

Sometimes, the only way people are able to understand you is for you to become one with them. And that’s just what Jesus did for us.

Hi there and welcome back to Daily Bible Promises with a Twist. And today, as always, we’re going to start by reading one verse from the New International Version. And today it is Hebrews 2:18. “Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

And to put this into context, we’re going to be reading a few other verses and I’m going to be using the New Living Translation. Chapter 2 of Hebrews verse 14 to Verse 18.”Because God’s children are human beings made of flesh and blood, the son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who has the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all those who left their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. We also know that the son did not come to help angels. He came to help the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be the merciful and high priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that he would take away the sins of the people since he himself had gone through suffering and testing. He is able to help us when we are being tested.”

The author of Hebrews is making two points very clear. Number one Jesus came to earth as flesh and blood. Why is that so important. There is an illustration I have heard that puts this into perspective. Imagine you’re walking along a forest path. From your vantage, you can see just to your right that there is a huge drop-off. Now imagine that you see a trail of ants making their way across that path. You know that they’re headed for destruction and you know they can’t see where they’re going because of the long grass that’s just on the edge between that cliff and the path.

There’s nothing that you can do. You can’t yell at the ants to say, “Hey ants you better move quickly, you’re about to fall off the cliff.” No, the only way you could ever warn those ants is if you became an ant yourself because you can speak their language and they would understand what you were trying to tell them. And then and only then you could point them to a safer path.

It’s not a perfect illustration I know but that’s basically what Jesus did. He came in human form and embraced for 33 years all the limitations that come with living in a finite body. He suffered, and he was tempted just like us in order that he could die for us and restore us to the one who wants to bring us back into all that He created us to be.
